ALBUM REVIEW

Rebecca Rippy

Telling Stories
Independent

Rebecca Rippy

Singer/songwriter Rebecca Rippey's Telling Stories is a personal collection of songs that boldly investigates the many intersections of family heritage and finds the Tennessee native bravely moving through the past with unflinching aplomb. The jazz-flecked "It's October" is an open meditation on the life of her late father; "I Do" is a sprightly take on the enduring joys and rigors of marriage and "O Brother" is a gentle homage to the singer's three siblings. Later, the rootsy "Time" is inspired by Rippey's Aunt, while the album-closing "Grandma's Song" is truly touching. Armed with a terrific range and an effortless delivery, Rippey seems to be equally at home playing folk numbers ("Easy Come, Easy Go") or breezy country ("I'm Leaving"). Terrific work.
